Good vs. Evil
Printed in the Eugene Weekly in November, 2001.

I think I speak for all fair-minded, God-fearing Eugeneans when I say that my thoughts and prayers are with you all at EW. When I first heard that you fell victim to "just another form of violence," my reaction was absolute shock. It took a while to sink in. Then came the mourning -- then the rage. How could someone sink to the level of pure evil, recklessly affixing "SMUT" and "SLEAZE" stickers to your red boxes with utter disregard for all those who would suffer as a result?!
Then you explained -- it was those uptight women (you know how they are), and everything would be just fine if they'd "lighten up" and pleasure themselves with a plastic phallus. And while your Christ-like insight certainly puts a lot of things in place, I find myself wanting more. Why are those terrorists so selfish? As you said, you were only defending freedom (of the press).
I'm sure that, aside from the wee bit of money you received for the full-page, full-color cover ad in question, you made many personal sacrifices ensuring that anyone (who could afford it) could get their message out. I imagine you got many offers from well-off agencies, like Sexual Assault Support Services and Womenspace, to peddle their one-sided services, but instead you did the right thing and gave the spot to Fantasyland, who "caters to both men and women."
I'm just one person, but my conscience compels me to act. I've set up a "Eugene Weekly Violent Act Relief Fund" to help the children and families hurt by this act of evil these evil-doers have done.
     God bless.
