Analysis:
Surveys
  • We found that 14 out of 25 occupants (56%) attempted to cool their dorm rooms by either the thermostat or the windows. Based on this, we can conclude that occupants are receiving too much solar gain from the windows, which means that the shading device is not shading the windows sufficiently. (We realize that some may be getting heat because they are on higher floors.)
  • Most occupants don't leave their blinds open because some want privacy and most want to prevent glare from entering.
  • Out of the 25 occupants, 15 (60%) don't sit by the window because of lighting or heating problems. Of the 7 occupants who had heating problems, 4 seemed to be getting too hot from the solar gain. Of the 15 occupants with lighting problems 4 reported too much glare.
  • Most occupants rated the shading device to be ineffective (below zero).

Daylighting Model

  • After collecting and comparing the data from sketch up models and the shading requirement program we concluded that the shading devices on the Living Learning Center are not providing adequate shading for the south facing dorm rooms.
  • The only months out of the year that the shading devices fully meet the requirements are March, April and May, where they surprisingly exceed the requirements by an average of 58%. The majority of the excessive shading occurs in the morning (8 am) and evening (6 pm). In the winter months, December, January and February, the shading requirements are only met in the morning and evening times and fall short of the necessary shading by an average of 14.5% in the afternoon (noon and 3pm). During the months of June, July and August the shading was consistently lower than the requirement in the late afternoon (3 pm) by an average of 26%. However the devices either met or exceeded the necessary shading for nearly all the other times (8 am, noon, and 6pm). In the fall, September and October, the requirements were only met in the evening time and were providing insufficient shading by 20%.
  • Overall the shading devices on the south façade of the Living Learning Center did not meet the shading requirements, providing insufficient shading for 31% of the year.
